There was a finger play we learned as kids that went (as you formed your fingers)
"Here is the church (fold your hands), here is the steeple (tent your forefingers), look inside and here are the people (open your hands and your wiggling fingers are the people filling the church). Promise, I didn't make it up.
We had another version where we laced our fingers on the outside and said "open it up and where are the people? Oh, it's Tuesday!" Yes, that's what we said... I'm not sure why because, truthfully, we went to church a lot it seemed (Stations, Mass, CCD, etc.).
I digress. Today was one of those "where are the people?" nights. Too bad too because it was a pretty awesome evening. I think the title was "Praying during Advent with your Family" or something more catchy. There were two priests and two staff members, along with some helpers, and it was really well done. Something for everyone and lots of great things to take home. (Snacks and crafts...five thumbs up from our little people!)
Not to take away from the scheduled program but my favorite part was looking up from a "parent session" and seeing our pastor playing "Simon Says" with all the little ones. That was precious.
I know I'm doing better with my Advent attitude too. Instead of being angry because the lack of people will likely fuel an unwillingness to provide more "family-centered programming" in the future, I am grateful for the opportunity we had to come together with two other families and learn more about how to pray with and teach our children during this blessed season of waiting. In itself, it was a break from our typical Tuesday night to be in church and concentrate on God.
If you happen to read this and are near St. Bernard, especially if you are parishioners, please think about attending one of the other sessions. Tuesday Dec 9th at 9:00am-10:30am, or
Saturday Dec 13th at 1:00pm-2:30pm.. You will be glad you went.
Our hope rests in Him. We are blessed.
